1. The trainer you select should always be able to show you his/her credentials, whether it be through ACE (American Council on Exercise), NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association), or any other credible association.
2. Experience-how long have they been training clients? Are you willing to train with someone with little or no experience, or do you feel more comfortable with someone who has already established themselves.
3. Cost-how much are you willing to pay for personal training? Many gyms charge different prices, many independent trainers have their own set of prices. Training can be expensive either way, so it sometimes comes down to how much are you willing to pay to change your lifestyle?
4. Availability-do your schedules match? Often with experienced trainers, they get booked frequently so you may not be able to fit into their busy time schedule. It's always good to select someone who is flexible, and someone who can work around your schedule and vice versa.
5. Location-always a good one here. People often settle for what's closer and whats convenient. The right trainer may be a little further than your "across the street gym," or "around the corner" gym. Often, independent trainers will come to you whether you have fitness equipment in your home or not.
6. Progression-whomever you decide on, he/she needs to have an established plan on tracking your progress. While working at my previous gym, 3/4 of the trainers there did not take any notes, wrote nothing down, and kept no record of what their client did from session-to-session. You should be able to ask your trainer at any time, from day one, what you did, how many times you did it, and at what capacity you performed it on.
7. Overall Reputation-what do people say about this trainer? It's always good to find out from other clients what they say about your trainer, what his/her co-workers say about them as well! In this business, your reputation is everything. If your selected trainer treats their clients with respect, makes the clients' fitness goals their priority, design specific programs to help them reach those goals, then you have found the right trainer for you!!!
